Para isso, escolheu a área de um antigo engenho de cana-de-açúcar que pertencia a Rodrigo de Freitas (oficial da cavalaria portuguesa que empresta seu nome à bela lagoa do Rio). Aberto ao público, o parque abriga hoje mais de 6.500 espécies de vegetais, árvores curiosas, fontes, um orquidário e um bromeliário. É uma delícia andar por lá sem rumo e deixar um pouco de lado o clima frenético da metrópole. Botanical Garden Rio de Janeiro breathes fresh air at the Botanical Garden, a green spot created by Don John the Sixth, king of Portugal and Brazil, in the beginning of the 19th century, with the aim of acclimatizing, to Brazilian weather, herbs and spices provenient from tropical Asia. Having that objective in mind, the king choose the area of an inactive sugar cane mill that had been owned by Rodrigo de Freitas (the Portuguese Cavalry official that lends his name to Rio’s famous lagoon). Open to the public, the park is the home to more than 6,500 plant species, odd trees, springs, an orchidarium and a bromeliarium.
