LOSING TIME
“Transition was slow, as I had to mount the tree to my rucksack.
To prepare
I trained with great triathletes as well as the Royal Marines and
Nepalese porters – experts in carrying very heavy things over long distances!”
CAMARADERIE
“I can’t stress enough how much love I have for this sport. Although there
were some great triathletes racing that day, each made time to come and wish the strange,
slow, ‘treeathlete’ luck. Some even slowed and stopped when they saw me with a puncture.”
TOUGH GOING
“The 62km bike was toughest. More weight
means you work harder and need more oxygen. Imagine
gasping for air while ascending a 12% winding hill with
a 100lb tree on your back! Not only that, but the lateral
sway of cycling leads to greater activation of biceps,
triceps, glutes and (most unfortunately for me, as I was
strugging to take each breath) the stomach muscles.”
